Major Warsaw Nightlife Changes: Two Local Staples Shut Down
Warsaw’s dining and nightlife scene is moving at lightning speed these days, and to be honest, keeping up is getting a bit difficult. If you haven’t been paying close attention to the local hospitality news this month, you might be surprised to hear that two major staples of the city’s map have just shut their doors for good.
What’s interesting is how completely different their exits were.
Over in Wola, Plac Europejski just lost its main anchor. After an impressive 10-year run, STIXX Bar & Grill wrapped up its final service over the weekend. This wasn’t a case of a venue slowly fading into obscurity. Instead, STIXX is making way for Warsaw's ever-expanding skyline. The entire building is scheduled for demolition so developers can start working on the new 130-meter Chopin Tower. Whether you went there for a corporate event, a Friday steak, or just to grab drinks on that massive terrace, STIXX definitely defined the energy of Warsaw's business district for a decade. They went out on their own terms with a big, public thank-you to the city.
On the flip side, the departure of another Warsaw classic happened entirely under the radar.
Weles Bar, the moody, chandelier-lit speakeasy hidden away on Żurawia street, has seemingly closed without a single goodbye message. There was no final toast or farewell party. Instead, eagle-eyed locals just noticed that their iconic 222-square-meter underground space—complete with photos of the familiar bar—is currently sitting on a commercial real estate website, listed as "available immediately." It’s a surprisingly quiet end for a place that was, for a long time, considered the absolute pinnacle of Warsaw's craft cocktail scene.
It’s always bittersweet to see long-standing venues go, especially when they represented two completely different sides of our city's nightlife—the massive, energetic grill and the intimate, secret cocktail den. Warsaw is clearly clearing the stage for new concepts, but these two will definitely leave a gap.
What do you think about the changing face of Warsaw’s nightlife? And more importantly, who do you think is taking over the mantle of the best speakeasy in town now that Weles is officially out of the picture?
